At the end of 2023, Mars Wrigley China optimized the individual packaging of its well-known brand SNICKERS® new bar by introducing mono flexible film, making packaging easier to be collected and recycled, a concrete move to achieve enterprises' goal of sustainability.

Plastic pollution now has become a global issue following climate change and brings great challenges to the sustainability development of the world. As a responsible enterprise, Mars Wrigley China has been commencing dual strategies of "Portfolio Transformation" and "Circular Economy Advocacy" to contribute to a circular economy.

"Since 2020, we have developed, invested and implanted the Packaging Sustainability plan, successfully reduced the usage of over 1,000 tons of virgin plastics through packaging weight reduction and portfolio redesign," Ketty Wang, Commercial Vice President of Mars Wrigley China, told the Global Times.

Wang also noted that the enterprise also promoted the establishment of the Sustainable Food Contact Materials Working Group co-initiated by the China National Food Industry Association and International Life Sciences Institute in the same year, aiming to explore the application of recycled content in food contact materials in China.

Basing on a series of efforts, Mars Wrigley China launched multiple progresses in the packaging sector in 2023, including firstly applying recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) for the transparent lid of the Crispy® chocolate canister in China in February. Subsequently, the M&M'S®, SNICKERS® and Dove® paper canister lids were also replaced by rPET.

Besides this, Mars Wrigley China launched its first M&M'S Compostable Paper Pack in China. Under industrial composting conditions, the new packaging can degrade by more than 90 percent into non-toxic products, water and CO2 in just six months. The new packaging has led to a 55 percent virgin plastics reduction from the old packaging.

China's 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25) stated that the country will control plastic pollution by promoting the use of alternatives to plastic, such as bamboo, wood, paper and degradable plastics.

It will also ramp up research on degradable plastic technologies and encourage the orderly development of related industries, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

"Aside from following the basic local regulation requirements, we have devoted efforts to ensuring the performance of recycled content can reach the same performance of virgin plastics by setting stringent standards and processes," said Wang, adding that Mars Wrigley China is committed to contributing to circular economy development in China by reimaging and redesigning its portfolio.

Regarding challenges in tackling plastic waste, Mars Wrigley China said effective infrastructure is essential to ensure circular economy development, and responsible waste disposal and a good waste management system can contribute to a robust infrastructure helping packaging waste get recycled into packaging again.

Mars Wrigley China is driving several partnerships with professionals, authorities, associations, and customers that will encourage the improvement of these systems through consumer education, industrial collaboration and legislation.

For instance, in 2022, Mars China collaborated with industry stakeholders to launch the "Flexible Plastics Reborn" project, propelling the creation of China's first closed-loop recycling system for flexible plastic packaging.

The project facilitated the publication of the China Flexible Plastic Packaging Recycling Baseline Report, and a total of over 5,000 tons of flexible packaging wastes was collected through collection pilots in Shanghai, Beijing and Hangzhou in East China's Zhejiang Province under the project.

Moving forward, Mars Wrigley China will keep sticking to its dual strategies in a bid to advocate for a favorite external environment for sustainable packaging, as well as to ensure its packaging portfolio can be 100 percent recycled, reused, or composted through innovation.
